PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide novel masking technology suited to implementation in an electronic camera. SOLUTION: The electronic camera is provided with: an image pickup part for picking up an optical image of a photographing field to generate image data; a focus detecting part for detecting the focusing range of the image data to select a picture area corresponding to the focusing range; a mask generating part for generating mask data indicating the picture area; and an interface part for recording or outputting the image data and the mask data.
