PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve the output efficiency of a job with mixed modes by shortening a switching time for operation modes differing in process speed. SOLUTION: An image forming device is equipped with a plurality of photoreceptor drums 12 which are arrayed in a column, an intermediate transfer belt 21 which is constituted adaptively to a plurality of process speeds and to which images are transferred from the photoreceptor drums 12 one after another, a primary transfer roll 15 which is provided opposite the photoreceptor drums 12 across the intermediate belt 21 and transfers the images formed on the photoreceptor drums 12 to the intermediate transfer belt 21, and a retracting mechanism which moves the primary transfer roll 15 away from the intermediate transfer belt 21 when the process speed of the intermediate transfer belt 21 is changed, thereby changing the process speed without stopping the intermediate transfer belt 21 etc. COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO
