The measuring method determines the cell propagation time between two measuring points within the network via a clock source at each measuring point. A number of cells are transmitted in both directions between the measuring points. The transmission times of the outgoing cells and the reception times of the incoming cells are then measured. The frequency offset and the time offset between the clock sources are also estimated. The propagation time of the cells is then calculated from the estimated frequency and time offsets and the measured transmission and reception times for cells transmitted in both directions.
