A matrix for a regenerative heat exchanger comprises a stack of corrugated sheets, the corrugations being in contact with and traversing corrugations of adjacent sheets at an angle of between 10 and 40 degrees. The sheets are provided with staggered slots or slits extending transverse to the corrugations (not shown on Fig. 2). As shown in Fig. 2, the corrugations are straight but they may be chevron-shaped (Fig. 5) with the chevron apices of adjacent sheets pointing in opposite directions. In use heat exchange fluid is directed (see arrows b on Fig. 2) at an angle of between 5 and 20 degrees with the corrugations. The material thickness of each sheet is between 0À0005 and 0À01 of an inch, and each corrugation has a height to stock thickness ratio of 5: 1 to 20: 1 and a pitch to height ratio of from 2: 1 to 3: 1. The material of the sheets may be stainless steel, aluminium, copper, ceramics, wood or paper.
