PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve a conventional problem that it is difficult to represent monotone using color inks and that not only chromaticness appears slightly but also a gray scale part has a rough image quality showing dither, and to provide a monotone image recorder capable of recording a high quality high gray level monotone image at a low cost. SOLUTION: The image recorder is arranged to record a monotone image by ejecting three kinds or more of ink. The monotone image is composed of a monotone ink having a density proportional to the lightness of three primary colors, i.e. cyan, magenta and yellow or red, green and blue, and image processing for printing out the monotone image is identical to that for printing out a color image.
