<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal device in which deterioration of an alignment layer with time is small, lowering of contrast after an extended period of use is small and orientation in an axial horizontal direction is of a high order and which has excellent display quality, and an electronic appliance using the device. <P>SOLUTION: A liquid crystal light bulb using the liquid crystal device is provided with a pair of substrates placed opposite to each other, a liquid crystal layer sandwiched between the substrates, electrodes formed on the respective substrates and alignment layers formed on surfaces of the electrodes and comprises a plurality of grooves 16, 16,... formed parallel to each other on a surface 15 of a substrate body 10A, wherein protrusions and recessions 10a with a saw-tooth waved cross section along an axis orientation direction Ax of a liquid crystal, cyclically varying along the axis orientation direction Ax, are formed in the grooves 16, 16,... and a difference in level G is set between an opening part 16a of the groove 16 and respective apexes 18 of the protrusions and recessions 10a. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO</p> |
