PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a composite thin film magnetic head which is low in the eddy current loss of a magnetic core and less in thermal protrusion, and to provide a magnetic disk device on which the composite thin film magnetic head is loaded. SOLUTION: As for the width and length of a lower magnetic pole 7 and upper and lower magnetic shields 5 and 2, the width and length of the lower magnetic shield 2 near a substrate side are increased up to the range of covering a coil area and is reduced almost to the width or length of an upper magnetic pole 14 at the upper magnetic shield 5 away from the substrate side and the lower magnetic pole 7, thereby reducing the eddy current loss. Further, the reduced part is filled with a high resistance non-magnetic metal layer 18 through an insulating layer 19 and the radiation of heat to the substrate side is secured. Also, the lower magnetic pole 7 and the upper and lower magnetic shields 5 and 2 are divided through the insulating layer 19 and the eddy current loss is reduced. COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO
