PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a catalyst having excellent activity and capable of remarkably decreasing sulfur components from a vacuum-distilled gas oil, its production method, and a method of decreasing the sulfur component in the vacuum-distilled gas oil. SOLUTION: In the catalyst, an alumina-containing carrier support group VIA and VIIIA metals deposited on the carrier and the catalysts preferably has 30% or higher ratio of a surface area belonging to the quaternary coordinated Al in the Al atom coordination structure by<SP>27</SP>Al-NMR analysis of the alumina state in the carrier, 3,500mm<SP>2</SP>/ml or higher outer surface area, and 0.45 ml/ml porosity in the catalyst-packed layer. At the time of producing the carrier, an alumina hydrated slurry is dehydrated by a pressure filtration apparatus in the final dehydration step. In the presence of the catalyst, the vacuum-distilled gas oil fraction is catalylically reacted under 3-8MPa hydrogen partial pressure, at temperatures of 300-420°C and 0.3-5/h liquid space velocity.
