The protein skimmer for fresh water aquaria comprises two concentric tubes (3, 4). Water containing air bubbles flows through an inlet (1) into the annular space (2) between these. Some bubbles rise and pass though an aperture (5) into a foam-building zone at the top of the inner tube. Others sink and then rise up the inner tube to reach the same zone. Foam is removed through a third tube (6) mounted above this.
