The mechanism has a cam ring (11) with several cam groups (G1-G3) of cam grooves (11a-1,2) and a frame (8) holding at least one optical element with several drive element groups movable linearly along the axis without rotation by turning the cam ring. The cam groups are offset in the ring peripheral direction and each has at least two grooves offset in the optical axis direction and essentially following an identical curved reference track (VT).
