PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an inexpensive steam reforming catalyst suitable for the production of a mixture gas containing carbon monoxide and hydrogen from hydrocarbon compounds.

SOLUTION: The catalyst for steam reforming is prepared by depositing at least one kind of metal selected from the groups VIII and IB in the periodical table on a solid superstrong acid carrier.
