PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To propose an integrally formed waveguide type optical amplifier wherein an electrically driven planary emission light source for excitation is made adjacent along the lengthwise direction of an optical waveguide added with a luminous substance. SOLUTION: The electrically driven planary emission light source 3 for excitation is made adjacent along the lengthwise direction of an optical waveguide 2 added with a luminous element and integrally formed. The light source 3 is an EL light source, and formed by laminating a transparent electrode 7, a dielectric layer 8, a Yn doped light emission layer 9, a dielectric layer 10, and a metal layer 11 in sequence from the side of the optical waveguide 2. Light emitted in the Yb doped light emission layer 9 by a potential gradient that is formed by a voltage applied from a power supply 12 between the transparent electrode 7 and the metal electrode 11 is combined with the optical waveguide 2 through the transparent electrode 7. As a result, the luminous element added to a core 5 of the optical waveguide 2, which is erbium in this case, is excited to amplify an optical signal. COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO |
