摘要 <P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal display device which is capable of displaying a stationary frame in a standby state and is not accompanied by electric power consumption. <P>SOLUTION: The liquid crystal display device changes the sequence of liquid crystal molecules from a first to a second steady state by providing a liquid crystal pixel unit with operating voltage signals of a plurality of levels when the liquid crystal molecules in the liquid crystal pixel unit is in the first steady state and by applying a switching signal to the liquid crystal pixel unit. The transmissivity of the liquid crystal pixel unit changes according to the operating voltage signals of a plurality of levels in the first steady state and maintains a specified level in the second steady state. The device has an upper base layer structure 61 which has an upper electrode and a half-wave plate, a lower base layer structure 62 which has a lower electrode, a liquid crystal layer 63 which is arranged between the upper and lower electrodes and is equal to a quarter-wave plate, and a signal generator 641 which is connected to the upper and lower electrodes and generates the switching signal for these electrodes. The transmissivity of the liquid crystal layer is adjusted according to the operating voltage signal of a plurality of levels of the first steady state and is constant in the second steady state.
