<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a wide-band quarter-wave plate and a circular polarizer which are manufactured by using rod-like liquid-crystalline compounds having satisfactory wavelength dispersion. <P>SOLUTION: The retardation plate has a long-sized transparent support body, a first optical anisotropic layer which is made of a horizontally oriented rod-like liquid-crystalline compound and practically has a phase difference of π for 550nm wavelength, and a second optical anisotropic layer which is made of a horizontally oriented rod-like liquid-crystalline compound and practically has a phase difference of π/2 for 550nm wavelength, and at least one of the first and second optical anisotropic layers is made of two or more kinds of rod-like liquid-crystalline compounds.
