PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing a halogen-containing aromatic compound, by which the CF<SB>2</SB>Br group-having aromatic compound (II) can efficiently be produced from inexpensive raw materials. SOLUTION: This method for producing the CF<SB>2</SB>Br group-having aromatic compound (II), comprising the bromine-substituting reaction of a CF<SB>2</SB>Cl group-having aromatic compound (I) with a brominating agent, is characterized by performing the bromine-substituting reaction in the presence of a Lewis acid. The bromine-substituting reaction also proceeds in a solvent-free state. Since the bromine-substituting reaction more efficiently proceeds in a nonpolar solvent, the CF<SB>2</SB>Br group-having aromatic compound (II) can be produced in high productivity. Since the CF<SB>2</SB>Br group-having aromatic compound (II) has excellent heat resistance and the like, a thin film formed by a CVD method has excellent heat resistance, does not cause a birefringence phenomenon in a visible light region, and can give optical guided wave paths and semiconductors whose each optical loss is small.
