PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an external electrode type fluorescent lamp having an electrode outside both the ends of a glass tube, which can suppress the occurrence of peeling of the electrode from the glass tube, causes less damage to the glass tube even if the lamp is lighted for a long time, and exhibits a high discharge efficiency. SOLUTION: A recess part 2 is provided, as a surface area enlargement part where the surface area is enlarged, at an end of the glass tube 1 having therein a fluorescent layer and a filler gas. A conductive film 3 as the external electrode is fixed in this recess part 2. The recess part 2 is shaped to be dented toward the discharge space side in a tube axial direction of the glass tube 1 to be in a hollow form (recessed form). The conductive film 3 is formed by being applied a conductive adhesive such as Ag paste or covered with a conductive material such as ITO, metal or carbon; and has an external leading-in wire embedded therein (attached thereon) for integration.
