PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a rotary head provided with a pair of magnetic heads whose output differences are small. SOLUTION: The tape medium recording and reproducing apparatus adopts the rotary magnetic head wherein the height from a position of gaps G<SB>1</SB>, G<SB>2</SB>up to the face of a substrate 52 is selected the same for the magnetic heads 21, 41 with different azimuth angles of the gaps G<SB>1</SB>, G<SB>2</SB>, the magnetic heads 21, 41 are formed by butting I cores 23, 43 and C cores 22, 42, the gap position is deviated in the width direction of the I cores 23, 43 and the C cores 22, 42, and the I cores 23, 43 and C cores 22, 42 are arranged in a way that the C core 22 precedes ahead the I cores 23 and the I core 43 precedes ahead the C core 42 in the rotating direction of a rotary cylinder.
