PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an electrode for detecting a water level to properly control a water level in a condensation reaction vessel and the like without impairing a water level detecting function by easily eliminating foreign matters on a liquid contact surface. SOLUTION: An outer peripheral face of a conductor is formed as the liquid contact surface 1 expanded at its upper part and narrowed at its lower part, and a plurality of grooves 3, 3 ... are formed from the upper part to the lower part of the liquid contact surface 1. For example, when it is used to control the water level in the condensation reaction vessel, the foreign matters mixed in the stirred flow generated by stirring in the vessel, are slipped off by dead-weight and the action of the surface tension of a water surface in accompany with the lowering of the water level in the vessel, even though the foreign matters are stuck to the liquid contact face 1 by coming on the flow, whereby errors in controlling the water level can be prevented.
