PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a printer for printing on a transmission recording medium in which print density can be calibrated. SOLUTION: In an unprinted region of a recording material, an optical filter is moved between a light emitting section and a light receiving section, transpmission density is detected when the quantity of light at the light receiving section of a detecting means is limited to a plurality of stages, a pattern is printed at a plurality of positions on the recording medium with different densities by a print means, a transmission density of each pattern is detected while separating the optical filter farther than the detecting means, and then image data is corrected depending on the comparison results of the transmission density when the optical filter is employed and the transmission density of the print pattern.
