PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reading apparatus wherein a white reference plate does not obstruct document conveyance even when the white reference plate is provided, which plate makes contact with a contact glass surface of a CIS (close contact type image sensor) regarded as a best point of the depth of a focus of the CIS. SOLUTION: In an image reading apparatus using a close contact type image sensor 1, a rotator 4 rotating around a support 5 is set as a shading correction white reference when a document passes through an upper portion of the close contact type image sensor 1. A document conveyance gap is secured between a contact glass 3 surface of the close contact type image sensor 1 and the rotator 4 by making use of the rotation of the rotator 4.
