PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an EL element with stable luminous characteristics, for one securing a surface smoothness of a thick-film ceramic dielectric layer with a sol-gel dielectric layer. SOLUTION: With the EL element with at least a first electrode layer, a dielectric layer, a luminous layer and a second electrode layer laminated (in turn) on a substrate with the dielectric layer consisting of a first dielectric layer and a second dielectric layer formed by a solution coating and baking method, a protection layer is fitted at a part where an electrode pattern of the second electrode layer is not formed on the surface of a layer at least adjacent to the second electrode layer.
