An oil skimmer has a semi-submerged oil pick-up belt (9) whose movement in turn sets up movement in the oil-polluted surface layer. The oil skimmer has a vertical endless belt which, just above the water surface, translates via grooved (18) drums to dip under the water surface and accumulate floating oil. The belt hoists the oil via a drive-drum (4) to a skimmer blade and collection trap above the water surface. The belt is made of stainless steel or plastic. The grooves in the drum are of helical profile.
