PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve lifting height detection precision by automatically presetting a counter during ordinary loading/unloading work without lowering a fork to its lower limit. SOLUTION: When one pulse outputted from an encoder 13 is 1 mm of the lifting amount of the fork 7, a limit switch 21 is provided for the fork 7. A 600 mm long dog 20 is provided so that the limit switch 21 may be off when the lifting height of the fork 7 reaches at least 600 mm. When the fork 7 goes up to at least 600 mm during loading/unloading work or the like, the limit switch 21 is off, and a counter which counts the number of pulses of the encoder 13 at a leading edge at its off operation is preset at "600". Thus, the counter can be preset for each loading/unloading operation, and errors in lifting height detection can be prevented from being accumulated, thus improving the lifting height detection precision.
