PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prolong the lifetime of a recorder greatly by keeping the light emitting section and the light receiving section of a sensor for reading the graduations of an encoder in clean state constantly even when a blot adheres to the sensor. SOLUTION: The inkjet printer comprises a recording head 5 for ejecting ink toward a recording medium, and a carriage 1 for mounting the recording head 5. The inkjet printer further comprises a mechanism for reciprocating the carriage 1 in a direction perpendicular to the carrying direction of the recording medium, an encoder 3 mounted on the body and having graduations for controlling its position, an optical sensor 4 (a light emitting section 4a and a light receiving section 4b) for reading the graduations disposed on the carriage side, and a means for cleaning the optical sensor 4.
