Unloading of a reciprocating piston compressor is effected when a spring-loaded inlet valve 10 is held off its seat 9 by the stem 14 of a plunger 13 subjected to a predetermined reservoir pressure transmitted through a valve casing bore 21, past a spring-biased ball or like valve 23 and through ducts 27, 19 to a plunger chamber 18 ; the valve 23 when in its closed position being seated within an enlargement 21b of the bore 21 and when unseated presents its whole diameter to the reservoir pressure. The valve 23 is held by a spring-biased plunger 24 slidable in a plug 28 past which air from chamber 18 may gain access to a vent port 29. |
