In some examples where the data storage system (110) includes a hard disk, the non-volatile integrated circuit based memory can be used to store system data such as a master list (127) for the hard disk. In other examples, the non-volatile integrated circuit based memory may be implemented in a removable media storage system (1510) to store operational data associated with a removable media. In other examples, the non-volatile integrated circuit based memory may be used to store user data.
