Oil- and/or gas-containing formations which contain bore holes with loose silicate particles are treated in order to consolidate the loose particles by contacting with a solution of a hydroxide of an alkaline earth metal in water. Specifically the hydroxide is pref. Ca(OH)2 and/or Mg(OH)2 and the soln. is pref. a saturated soln. The soln. pref. also contains 1-6% wt. sodium chloride, up to 6% wt. phenol, and up to 6% wt. glycerol. The solution pref. has a pH in the range 10.5-12.6. The soln. is placed in the bore hole, and then passes into the formation through the pressure exercised by the liquid column. The soln. is held in contact with the underground formation with the minimum of disturbance for a period of at least 1 hr. The soln. is prepared by injecting hydroxide into a stream of hot water being pumped into the bore hole. Contact with the silicate particles is maintained for a sufficiently long period to form a hydrated calcium or magnesium-contg. coating layer on the particles.
|
