The inlet or exhaust valve (19) for an internal combustion engine has a valve stem (20) carrying a piston (14) with a seal (13) in a cylinder (15). Oil in a pressure chamber (22) presses on the top surface (21) of the piston. Several valves with armatures (4,10,25) have different degrees of lift and control a high-pressure oil inlet (30) and oil drainage channels (8,27). The valves are controlled by electric coils (9).
