A ferrous article which is in contact with another ferrous article, e. g. the coils of a wire or a steel strip, is chromized by coating with an adhesent layer of Cr, which may contain anotner metal, e.g. Ni, by e.g. electrolysis, spraying or rolling a layer of powdered Cr, coating with a metal halide, e. g. Fe, Ni, Co or Mn, and then heating to at least 750‹C. A first stage 350 to 700‹ C. is carried out in a purging gas, e. g. hydrogen, argon or helium. Ammonium chloride may be present with the metal halide.</p> |
