PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an inexpensive transmission type polarizer having superior quenching performance and low insertion loss. SOLUTION: In the transmission type polarizer, at least grooves having a cycle p of 0.3μm or less are formed in a linear shape on a substrate. Each of the grooves has a depth h of h>w to the width w of each of the grooves. A metal selected from Au, Ag, Cu, Ta, Al, Cr, and Mo or a composite metal containing their metals is buried in each of the grooves. A method for manufacturing the transmission type polarizer comprises: forming at least the grooves having the cycle p of 0.3μm or less in the linear shape on the substrate; forming the depth h of each of the grooves to h>w to the width w of each of the grooves on the substrate; forming the metal selected from Au, Ag, Cu, Ta, Al, Cr, and Mo or the composite metal containing their metals on the substrate to bury the metal in each of the grooves; removing the metal projected from the grooves.
