1,183,763. Treating polymers. UNION CARBIDE CORP. 16 Feb., 1967 [18 Feb., 1966], No. 7438/67. Heading C3P. [Also in Division C7] ] A polymeric substrate of, e.g. polyolefine, P.V.C., polyvinyl acetate, polystyrene, polyacrylonitrile, polyformal or polyacrylic and methacrylic acid esters is electroless plated with, e.g. copper by first incorporating in the substrate an organic compound having a minimum oxidation rate of at least twenty times the oxidation rate of stearic acid. - The organic compound may be one of the group consisting of unsaturated fatty acids, the esters, amides and imides thereof; monounsaturated fatty acid amides and imides; unsaturated aliphatic hydrocarbons; unsaturated alicylic compounds; aliphatic polyethers, the adducts and esters thereof; tertiary aliphatic compounds, the esters amides and imides thereof; and aliphatic substituted aromatic compounds containing at least one benzylic hydrogen. The surface of the substrate is subsequently oxidized by, e.g. solutions of chromic or chromic and sulphuric acids, flame treatment corona discharge, glow discharge, ozonation or high energy radiation. The substrate is sensitized with a stannous chloride solution and immersed in a solution of a halide salt of Pt, Ag, Pd or Au or a metal may be applied by spraying, gas plating, cathode sputtering, vacuum deposition or decomposition. The electroless metal coating can be subsequently electroplated with Cu, Ni or Cr.
