PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an electric capacitance sensor for giving information on the state of an object to be detected with a relatively simple structure. SOLUTION: This electric capacitance sensor is characterized by having a first electrode group, comprising a unidirectionally extending detection electrode of a prescribed width provided on a plane and dummy electrodes substantially parallel provided on both sides thereof, a second electrode group symmetrically provided on the plane about a straight line substantially parallel to an extending direction in which a prescribed distance is kept from the first electrode group, a voltage source for placing a voltage across the first and second electrode groups, a current measuring means for measuring the value of current flowing through detection electrodes in the first and second electrode groups, a storage means for storing therein a data table in which electric capacitance between the detection electrodes is parallelized with the state of the object to be detected contiguous to the detection electrodes, and a detection means for detecting the state of the object to be detected by using the table and the value of the current measured by the measuring means.
