PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent a variety of adverse effects caused by misfire of an internal combustion engine. SOLUTION: When misfire occurs, emission of air-fuel mixture from a misfiring combustion chamber is controlled or stopped. By doing so, air-fuel mixture remaining in the combustion chamber can be burned in the next cycle, and exhausted after power generation. As a result, this can prevent adverse effects, such as deterioration of fuel consumption rate, increase in emission of air pollutants, and deterioration of purifying catalysts. Also, the air-fuel mixture exhausted from the misfiring combustion chamber can be returned to other combustion chambers and burned. COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO
