PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a new metallocene-skeleton-free transition metal complex and a method for producing an olefin polymer by using the complex. SOLUTION: The olefin polymerization catalyst contains as a catalyst component a complex obtained by reacting a boron coordination compound represented by the formula äwherein Ph is phenylene; R<SP>1</SP>is an alkyloxy, an aralkyloxy, an aryloxy, an alkylideneamino, or the like; R<SP>2</SP>is an alkyl, an aralkyl, an aryl, an alkoxyl, an aralkyloxy, an aryloxy, a substituted silyl, or a substituted amino; z is 1 or 2; Q is oxygen, sulfur, selenium, or =N=R<SP>3</SP>(wherein R<SP>3</SP>is hydrogen, an alkyl, an aralkyl, or the like); and n is 0 or 1} with a transition metal compound represented by formula (2): M(X<SP>1</SP>)(X<SP>2</SP>)(X<SP>3</SP>)(X<SP>4</SP>) (wherein M is a group 4 transition metal; and X<SP>1</SP>to X<SP>4</SP>are each hydrogen, a halogen, an alkyl, an aralkyl, an aryl, a substituted silyl, an alkoxyl, an aralkyloxy, an aryloxy, or a disubstituted amino).
