PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a glass base material for forming which is capable of preventing fusion with the surface of a mold by a simple method even when it is composed of glass containing a component which tends to vaporize, and from which an optical element can be obtained without causing haze, white turbidity or cracks on its surface, and to provide a glass product. SOLUTION: The glass base material is manufactured by immersing a glass base material having a self-assembled film preliminarily formed on its surface into an organic solvent containing an organic silicon-containing compound, an organic sulfur-containing compound, an organic fluorine-containing compound or an organic nitrogen-containing compound. The glass base material for forming is manufactured by subjecting the glass base material obtained by the method mentioned above to heat treatment so as to thermally decompose the self-assembled film. The glass product is manufactured by heating and softening the glass base material and press forming the softened glass base material by using the mold. COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO
