An adjustable support hinge for furniture, e.g. for a reclining armchair, has each hinge half (1, 2) fitted with a ratchet disc (4, 5) with radial teeth and which are held in contact by an axial spring. The ratchet discs are prised apart by a control disc (7) between the discs and which has radial tags which interact with wedges (8) fixed on one ratchet wheel. The load on the hinge is spread over the number of interacting ratchet teeth, while the number of teeth provides a fine adjustment.
