An IR sensor array is provided on a substrate 201. The substrate is formed from silicon although any other suitable material may be used if desired. Each sensor 203 is comprised of an IR absorbing material and one or more associated thermopiles (not shown). The hot junctions of the thermopiles are arranged to lie close to the IR absorbing material in order that they are at substantially the same temperature as the IR absorbing material and the cold junctions are arranged to lie in the thicker substrate areas 208 immediately surrounding the IR absorbing material. The thermopiles are preferably connected in series to increase the magnitude of the signal generated.
