PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a digital data recording and reproducing method for securing the secrecy of data recorded in a recording medium and preventing the unauthorized erasure and destruction of the data, and the device. SOLUTION: To chain information indicating the connection relation of recording minimum units included in file system information indicating the structure of a file recorded inside the recording medium of digital data recorded in the recording medium as the file, a defect identifier indicating that the file is defective is set. In keeping the digital data recorded in the recording medium secret and reproducing the secret digital data, the file system information to which the defect identifier is set is restored to the file system information before the defect identifier is set and the digital data are reproduced on the basis of the restored file system information.
