An image forming apparatus 1 which copies and outputs an input image has an accumulating unit 14 for accumulating input image data and a temporary storage unit 22, 22a, 13, 13a whose initializing time is shorter than that of the accumulating unit 14. When the initialization of the temporary storage unit 22, 22a, 13, 13a is completed to become operable before completing the initialization of the accumulating unit 14, a copying action is started while accumulating input image data in the temporary storage unit 22, 22a, 13, 13a in place of the accumulating unit 14.
