PURPOSE: A pharmaceutical composition comprising active ingredients that cause upper gastrointestinal tract irritation and ion exchange resin is provided which can protect the tissues of the buccal cavity, pharynx, esophagus, and the stomach from erosion and ulceration generated from exposure of the irritating active ingredient to the tissues. CONSTITUTION: The pharmaceutical composition contains 5 to 75% by weight of active ingredients that cause upper gastrointestinal tract irritation, such as polyphosphonates, 25 to 95% by weight of ion exchange resin and pharmaceutically acceptable excipients. The ion exchange resin is anion exchange resin and cation exchange resin which are suitable for ingestion by a human being. The excipients are polymer, resin, plasticizers, fillers, lubricants, solvents, cosolvents, surfactants, preservatives, sweeteners, flavorings, buffer systems, pharmacy grade dye or pigments and viscosity agents.
