The defective location (7) causing leakage is first located. An insert (9) is used to seal it. This comprises e.g. a: sealing body (11) facing the pipe inner wall (12), sealant mass (17) and a spring (10). The spring is compressed to minimize its circumference. The insert is introduced into the pipe channel (8) in this state, and is located at the position of the defect. The spring is released. This holds the insert in position and seals the defective location. The insert clamps itself against the internal wall of the pipe.
