A process for the manufacture of amino carbohydrates and derivatives thereof

Aminocarbohydrates and derivatives thereof are prepared by reducing the corresponding carbohydrate derivative in which at least one hydroxy radical is replaced by a substituted or unsubstituted arylazo radical. When the starting material contains one or more protecting groups, the protecting group or some or all of the protecting groups may be removed after the reduction. 4,6 - O - benzylidene - 3 - deoxy - 3 - phenylazoa - D - glucopyranoside and the corresponding 3 - o - tolylazo -, 3 - p - tolylazo -, 3 - p - chlorophenylazo- and 3-p-fluorophenylazo derivatives are prepared by reacting 7,9-dihydroxy-6-a -methoxy - 2 - phenyl - trans - m - dioxano- [5,4 - e] [1,4] - dioxepan hydrate with phenylhydrazine or the appropriate substituted phenylhydrazine.
