A rack-and-pinion mechanism comprises a toothed wheel engaging a hollow rack constituted by a flexible helical coil within guiding means extending away from the neighbourhood of the toothed wheel. A toothed driving wheel 1 engages with a flexible helical coil 3 of steel or plastic carried in a tubular guide member (not shown). The coil 3 may be restrained against compression movement by a planar or a twisted strip 9 engaging the coil by notches 7. The internal support may be tricorn in crosssection, with or without a reinforcing core of wire, and having projections on one flange to engage every third convolution of the coil. In the embodiment shown in Fig. 9, the coil portion 32 is made integral with a supporting helically wound strip 31 whose edges 33, 34 are radiused and held in abutting relation by a central tensioning member 35 to allow both compression and tension in the coil member. In a further embodiment the coil and internal support are formed as shown in Fig. 10 with interengaging flanges. The mechanism may be used for the operation of the windows or sliding roof of an automobile and driven by hand or by an electric motor. |
