Process for the catalytic conversion of unbranched, or slightly branched, hydrocarbons into hydrocarbons with branched, or more highly branched, carbon chains

Unbranched or sparsely branched chain olefins are converted to branched or more branched chain hydrocarbons by a hydroisomerization process in which the catalyst has a pore volume of at least 0.4 ml. per gram and comprises a solid acidic isomerization component and a hydrogenation component which is a sulphide and/or selenide of a Group VIa and/or VIII metal. The isomerization catalyst may be silica-alumina, silica-zirconia, boria-alumina, boria-silica, or alumina-halogen and the hydrogenation component may form 0.5-15 weight per cent of the catalyst. Conversion is effected at 100 -500 DEG C and 10-150 atm. with a hydrogen partial pressure of 50-95% of the total using 2-10 vols. of hydrogen per vol. of gaseous starting material and a space velocity of 0.3-10 kg./kg./hr. The catalyst particle size is preferably below 2 mm. and is used in a fluidized bed having a diameter to height ratio of 1 : 2 to 1 : 5. Specification 878,035 is referred to.
