Apparatus indicating the varying maximum speed at which an aircraft can be safely flown according to its altitude comprises an aneroid capsule 14 displacing an input shaft 26 in accordance with the static pressure of the atmosphere, the shaft 26 actuating an output shaft 29 through a discontinuous linkage whereby a pointer 18 operated by the shaft 29 moves in accordance with a different function of the static pressure over different ranges of altitude and enables the actual air speed indicated by a contrasting pointer 60 to be compared with maximum safe speed. The maximum safe speed for a particular aircraft is related to altitude as shown in Fig. 1 by the functions 10,11,12 and 13 of which the first two may be approximated by the functions 23 and 24. The linkwork for causing the pointer 18 to move in response to change of altitude in accordance with these functions comprises lost motion mechanism 20, 21, 22 between the capsule 14 and lever 16 adjustably clamped to shaft 26 whereby the pointer 18 remains stationary between ground level and 7000 ft. and levers 38, 39, 40 attached to shaft 29 co-operating respectively with levers 31, 33, 32 also adjustably clamped to shaft 26. A spring 42 biases the shaft 29 in a clockwise direction and when, at 7000 ft., the shaft 26 begins turning anti-clockwise the lever 40 maintains contact with the lever 32, the transmission ratio therebetween being arranged so that the pointed 18 moves according to function 24. At 10,000 ft. the lever 33 is engaged by the lever 39, the levers 32, 40 break their engagement and the lower transmission ratio is arranged so that the function 12 is followed by the pointer 18. At 25,000 ft. lever 31 engages lever 38 and reverses the direction of rotation of shaft 29 causing the pointer 18 to follow the function 13. The linkages are individually adjustable to vary the drive ratios and to vary the duration of engagement of the different linkages.
