The lock and release for the lid (3) of a waste container has a bolt (15) which selectively extends to engage an orifice (16) in the container (1). An actuator (19) allows movement of the bolt to a retracted position, when the container is in a filling position and the cover. The actuator can cooperate with corresponding formations (36,50) on the bolt so that retraction occurs in a horizontal position.
