<p>A nonwoven fabric having an integral structure comprises a base stratum in the form of a fibrous web, said web containing fibres located in planes substantially normal to the surfaces of the web, the fibres projecting beyond the surface of the web as fibre tufts, thus simulating a pile fabric, the fibre tufts being set in the base stratum. The fibrous web also comprising heterofilaments having a potentially adhesive component which may be activated by heat or chemical treatment. The method of making such nonwoven fabrics comprises needling a fibrous web, which may be cross-lapped, located on a support material, which may be a woven fabric or have the structure of a woven fabric, subjecting the structure to a setting treatment and thereafter separating the support material from the web. The fibres employed may be cotton, wool, rayon, nylon, acrylic, vinylic, polyester or protein, and may be crimpable or shrinkable. The fabric thus produced may be attached to a rubber or other backing.</p> |
