The double cone friction clutch described in the parent Specification is modified by forming either or both of the preloaded resilient annular members connecting the friction cones 4 with the hub 3 as a number of axially separated elements 6<SP>1</SP>, thereby reducing their thickness and the risk of overheating. Cooling may also be augmented by providing radial openings 17, 18 through the hub between the elements 6<SP>1</SP> to allow the outward flow of air from the centre of the clutch. The resilient elements 6<SP>1</SP> are secured to rigid core and rim members 6<SP>1</SP>a, 6<SP>1</SP>c by conical surfaces tapering towards the middle of the clutch.
