PURPOSE: A device for controlling communication of a multi-room type air conditioner and a method therefor are provided to realize smooth normal communication between an outdoor unit and indoor units by preventing communication hold. CONSTITUTION: A device for controlling communication of a multi-room type air conditioner connects communication lines(L1,L2) between a single outdoor unit(30) and a plurality of indoor units(40A,40B,40C). A power sensor(44) senses a power-state of each indoor unit. A switching unit connects or disconnects the communication lines to or from communication modules(41) of the indoor units. A microcomputer(42) recognizes power on/off states according to a signal inputted through the power sensor. If the indoor units are turned off, the microcomputer controls the switching unit to disconnect the communication lines.
