Producing stainless steels, especially containing chromium and chromium-nickel comprises heating slags containing a high quantity of chromium with an added charge; reducing the slag during melting with silicon and carbon under favorable thermodynamic conditions of the arc once the slag has reached a minimum of 1490 deg C; treating the melt in the same vessel by air refining during which the carbon content is reduced to less than 0.9 %; tapping the slag at 1620-1720 deg C; mixing the melt with an inert gas; adding alloying agents, slag formers, reductants, dust containing metal oxides and metals; and tapping the melt in which non-reduced slag remains in the treatment vessel.
